The Challenge

Bow hunting is a challenging way to bag any game. Whitetail deer, Elk, and Mule deer can test the skills of the best hunters. Fallow Deer hunting, especially Trophy Fallow Deer hunts, present an entirely new set of exciting challenges. Fallow deer do not follow the traditional habits of other species… they make their own rules. Patience is definitely a virtue when hunting these exotic creatures. Whitetails generally follow a routine and visit the same areas daily. Fallow deer will sometimes not return to an area for up to a week. Stalking and glassing a herd, then determining the best approach and set up are only the beginning of this challenge. Fallow deer do not always follow trails, but seem to wander aimlessly, and seem to have a sixth sense that would make Whitetail’s jealous.

2. The Difference

Trophy Fallow Deer have many differences from their native North American cousins. To begin with, there are a variety of colors in their coats. There are spotted fallow with a tan to reddish color coat covered in white spots that closely resembles an Axis deer; there are chocolate colored (sometimes with faint spotting,) and there are all white coats. The antlers of a mature fallow buck resemble a cross between a moose and an elk with palmation occurring on the upper part of the antler of bucks aging four years and up. Fallow deer are comparatively smaller than whitetails in height, but stocky in build. Average mature fallow bucks can weigh between 160 and 200lbs.

3. The Cost

Booking a bow hunt for a trophy animal can become very costly. The price for a trophy big game animal alone can be staggering, not to mention out of state license fees, lodging, meals, trophy fees, etc. A trophy elk hunt can cost upwards of ,000.00 and be well worth every penny, but in tough economic times that kind of money isn’t always expendable or available. An all-inclusive Fallow Deer hunt package in Wisconsin can be had for less than 00.00 leaving a little breathing room in your wallet. The taxidermy price is usually about the same as a Whitetail deer as well.

4. The Benefit

Bow hunting for trophy fallow deer can open up a whole new experience for you, your family, and your friends. It offers affordability, and variety allowing you to harvest a fallow of each color or what is referred to by some as “The Fallow Slam.” You can stretch it out over a few years taking a trophy of each color each year, and maybe take a friend or family member with you. Wisconsin offers some of the most beautiful scenery in North America along with a rich heritage of culture and history. Wisconsin also offers some of the best hunting in North America with a mixture of hardwoods, pine forests, marshes and agricultural fields. The meat of the fallow deer is absolutely delicious. Some prefer it to elk and whitetail.

5. The Experience

Hunting anything anywhere can provide an experience worth re-telling, but consider Wisconsin bow hunting for your next hunt, to a first class hunting facility and hunting an animal as exotic and majestic as a trophy fallow deer. Experiencing new country, new big game, and a whole new reason to hunt will give you an experience you can enjoy and talk about for years to come, and a trophy worthy of admiring for the rest of your life.

Article by Todd Jensen

Copyright (c) 2011 Todd Jensen

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard other hunters say that they are going to go out and do some preseason whitetail deer scouting when the calendar says it is the middle of August. I too find August an exciting time to go out, and usually just before dark, I am able to find deer that include groups of bucks hanging out together. You are able to get either some nice still photographs or video of them. The problem is that in August your deer scouting activities are limited. You are able to find and see deer but it is too late to really scout them.

If you try in August to do a full scale scouting effort, you will go a long ways towards driving the big bucks in the area either to another area or force them into seclusion and nocturnal movement only. In addition, this is the time of year that Mother Nature has completely vegetated the surroundings. I am fully reminded of this every year simply by looking out my kitchen window. I have several large lilac trees that grow along my fence that borders my neighbor’s property. In August I can barely see their house and in the winter I can barely see the lilac trees that produce this incredible amount of foliage. In my hunting areas this phenomenon is magnified ten times over.

If you want to see and find real live deer with their racks on their heads, then go out in August, but if you really want to SCOUT the large bucks in your area then go out in spring right after the snow melts.

You will find that right after the snow melts that the woods are almost identical to how they were left in the fall after the rut. Vegetation both on the ground and on the trees is either missing or very short making searching for rubs much easier. The earth is moist exposing tracks and scrapes. Most of this sign disappears once the ground dries. The ground becomes light colored and easily disturbed. Offshoot trails have not been covered up by new grass or fallen leaves. Big whitetail bucks rarely follow the “beaten path” come hunting season and knowing the location of offshoot trails is critical to stand placement. This is also the best time of the year to find shed antlers, especially on the east coast. Very few antler sheds are around in the fall on the east coast due to rodents eating them for the minerals.

Two other advantages to spring whitetail deer scouting is first it is great exercise and second you will be totally focused on studying the area and looking for all available sign. Thoughts of scaring deer or disturbing the area are not as large of a concern.

I encourage you to get off the couch this spring and spend some quality time scouting and patterning the whitetail deer that live in your hunting area. Done properly, adjustments for relocated or changing food sources will be the only scouting necessary come hunting season.

Killing a mature whitetail deer is easier when you get away from the other hunters. Most people avoid the places where they are likely to be. They will place stands on the edge of cover or near food plots. Once in awhile one of them will get lucky. Most of these hunters will harvest a deer that is 1 1/2 years old. You can be the camp legend if you hunt in the swamps for mature whitetails.

When hunting in swamps saftey should be your main concern. You will likely be far away from other hunters. Make sure someone knows where you will be. A handy tool to carry would be a walking stick. You can use this to remove cobwebs and as protection. When most people think of swamps they think of snakes, alligators and mosquittos. With some caution and a good bug spray they will leave you alone.

Most alligators will usually avoid you. They are after an easy meal. You look like a giant to them. The alligators you find while hunting in shallow water swamps will be less than five feet long. There will be plenty of food for little alligators. Big alligators prefer areas with deeper water and more food. While wading make a little noise if you see one to get its attention. This will often cause it to leave.

Snakes are by far the most dangerous creature in swamps. Ninety nine out of a hundred times the snake will leave the area before you even see it. If a snake does get close to you use your walking stick to keep it away. Do not play with snakes. In your daypack you should carry a snake bite kit.

Mosquito’s are the biggest headache you will find in swamps. The movement used to swat them away will draw a deers attention directly to you. To keep them away I wear a mesh bug suit while moving. Once I have reached my hunting area I turn on a Themacell. It truly works as advertised.

The most dangerous part of hunting in swamps is when a hunter gets lost. To prevent this plot your vehicle or the spot that you enter the swamp on a GPS. Swamps get dark early and it is easy to get lost in them.

In swamps there are often tiny islands that the deer bed on. Try to find these the trails that lead to them. It is best not to step on the island. This is where the deer are bedded. Set up where you can overlook a trail or a staging area on the island. Often multiple rubs will be visible along the edge of the island. Use binoculars to check the islands for water oaks. Just make sure you are downwind from these areas.

Hunting wet areas require you to use your ears as much as your eyes. You will often hear the splashing noise that deer make as they walk through water long before you see them. If you have never heard deer moving through water you will be surprised at how much noise they make.

While in a swamp limit your rattling and grunt calling. Sound travels along way in these quiet areas. If you do use them keep the volume down. The biggest problem with using calls in here is that the deer can be anywhere. If they can pinpoint the noise coming from a tree you will likily see the white tail waving good bye.

Recovery of an animal in swamps presents a challenge unlike other places. The chances are the deer will run into the water.The trick here is to watch the direction the deer is heading. Give it plenty of time to expire before taking up the blood trail. Unless you watch it fall in sight give it a full hour. Look for sign that will tell you what kind of shot you made. This is no place to bump a wounded deer so if the evidence looks like a marginal shot then you need to back out for several more hours. When you are positive that the deer is dead start blood trailing it. Look for blood on trees and stumps. Mark every spot with flagging tape. Every few steps look ahead for antler tips or a leg sticking out of the water. Often this will be all that is visible in the water.

Once you have left the beaten path and ventured into this deer paridice your hard work will be rewarded. Just remember to smile when your hunting buddies are taking pictures of your monster buck.

If you’re looking for an adventurous and exciting hunting experience, then Alabama deer hunting would be the right sport for you. You can now find the best Alabama hunting lodge that will provide all the accommodations, environment, and the management techniques when it comes to whitetail deer hunting.

But before you head out to the field and aim to kill a monster buck, there are several tips and guidelines that you have to know. While most of them are focused on your safety and of all the people around you, a hunter would always expect to bag a quality deer by the end of the day. Most hunters are already aware of the many secrets when it comes to deer hunting as they have acquired collective skills through years of experience. But whether you’ve been hunting for just a few years or for most of your entire life, you can testify that knowing the secrets ahead of time will definitely give you an advantage and increase your chances of success in this field. So here are three simple and effective secrets if you want to have successful deer hunting in Alabama.

• Be Prepared – As always, preparedness is on top of the list. As the saying goes: “luck always favors the prepared. You can increase your chances of success on any field by becoming more knowledgeable and skillful on the tasks involved. It generally starts by having enough interest and enthusiasm on the sport of deer hunting. Knowledge is the key and you can start by using the resources available to research and inquire about Alabama deer hunting. Being prepared means that you are complete with proper and appropriate equipment or outfit for hunting. Also, you must scout the area thoroughly before hunting. Make sure that you’re familiar with the place or at least have someone who is familiar with the place. With Alabama hunting lodge, you will be accompanied by hunting guides to ensure safety for everyone.• Be patient – Patience is always a virtue. What does this mean in the field of deer hunting in Alabama? Of course you can’t expect to have something to bring back if you didn’t spend enough time in the hunting area. Also, it is a good practice to go for the big bucks. Therefore, you have to be patient by not aiming for a smaller deer. Remember that they can be bigger next year and it will be more rewarding to wait for a monster buck.• Know your target- This is almost self explanatory. If you know how a deer behaves, then you can predict when and where to make that shot in order to bag a nice buck.

Article by Jelena Leger

Deer hunting can be a challenge, especially after putting all those hours scouting and preparing for the season to start. Do not forget the importance of the most fundamental piece of hunting equipment which is the rifle. With so many calibers and loading types, it can be hard to decide which one is best for a particular hunter.

First, consider the distances in the hunting areas where deer may be seen. If a food plot is three hundred yards long, be sure the rifle is a caliber that has the power to propel a bullet that far without alot of drop. Weight or grain of the bullet is also important. Longer barrel length offers more accuracy at longer ranges as well. Longer range rifles include the 7mm, 6mm,.243,.270 and 30-06 among others. Heavier grain bullets tend to drop faster thus hitting the ground before hitting the target. Therefore, in the three hundred yard food plot, a slightly lighter grain bullet will travel farther. In wooded areas or small food plots, longer and shorter range rifles will do fine. usually, the heavier bullets have more knockdown power so in areas where distance will not be an issue, a heavier grain bullet may be in order. Just be sure to sight in the scope of the rifle using the same grain of bullet that will be used for hunting.

Secondly, be sure to consider the need for a quick second shot. This is usually hunter preference. A single shot rifle will only offer one shot per opportunity unless of course a deer is wounded by the first shot or failed to be spooked by the first and allows time for the hunter to reload. A bolt action rifle will offer more shot opportunities after the first shot but time must be taken to pull the bolt back to reload which usually only takes a couple of seconds. This may be repeated until the magazine empties. A semiautomatic rifle will shoot a cartridge each time the trigger is pulled until the magazine is empty. Less movement on the hunters part is involved with the latter. Again, deciding on loading style is more hunter preference.

Thirdly, consider the recoil of a rifle. Younger hunters and some women prefer a rifle that will not bruise the shoulder after only a couple of shots. Some of the smaller caliber rifles tend to have less recoil. The.30-30 and.243 usually have less recoil but are plenty high powered enough to kill a trophy whitetail. Of course there are others. It is best to research and shoot some of these rifles in order to get a feel for them.

Choosing the right deer rifle is a combination of hunter preference and hunting environment. Make sure especially in areas with the potential for a long shot that the chosen rifle and cartridge are up for the task. With the right rifle for both the hunter and situation, the odds are better for taking home that monster buck.

Whitetail deer hunting is one of the most popular hunting genres in the entire world with more and more enthusiasts every year. For a first time whitetail deer hunter it can be a rather difficult thing to do that is why a few tips and tricks about this type of activity are needed in order to start out with decent results.

Experienced hunters recommend checking the hunting equipment when going into the stand, not later when a buck will eventually walk out. Check if your scope is clear, the shells in the chamber or if you use a bow, check if your bow will draw back properly. There are many issues to take into consideration that is why we strongly advise to prepare well ahead.

If you plan on hunting whitetail deer in a food plot or a large field it is recommended to do it during the late hours of the day. Remember that deer like heavy cover so it is advisable to try and clear a path through the cover that you consider these animals might be using. The whitetail deer usually prefers using the easiest routes possible. Once you have set up a path, hunt over the built path in a hunting tree stand.

If using deer calls isn’t your cup of tea ( mainly because you are afraid of scaring these animals ), it is advisable to use it only after you see a deer that you are not willing to shoot. Once you have done so, you will notice that it doesn’t scare them and you will observe their reactions. Be sure to use the most suitable calls, otherwise the animals will get suspicious.

The best advice possible is to hunt whenever you have the possibility. Experience is crucial, only by going out there in the wilderness you will learn more about their habitat, feeding habits and other characteristics that you will eventually use in your advantage. We strongly suggest that you follow our advice and the next time you have the possibility to hunt, don’t hesitate, you know what they say: practice makes perfect and this is statement is entirely applicable for hunting not only whitetail deer but other animals as well.

When you are about to hunt in a new area, it is advisable to hunt at a new stand each day for a short period of time as this is the most efficient way to learn about the deer movement routes. If you spot a deer and shoot it and afterwards you jump it up a very short distance from the position you have made the shot, it is advisable to stand back and give it time to take its last breath, if you shot it during the late hours of the day it is recommended to wait overnight.

If you plan on hunting whitetail deer with a bow, experienced hunters recommend doing it from a tree stand because it is way more efficient in comparison with hunting from ground level. Another advice, use only one pin because it is easier to aim high or low on the whitetail deer than attempt to remember to use a specific one when the large one walks out.

We hope that our suggestions will come in hand and on your first attempts on hunting these animals you will get at least decent results. Remember; practice every time you have the chance.

Summary: This article debates the issue of first time whitetail deer hunting and offers advice and information regarding the basics of this hunting genre.

TECHNICAL TERMS USED IN THIS REVIEW:

AE LOCK-AF LOCK: Is an auto (A) exposure (E) lock (L) function that locks the camera whilst the AEL button is being pressed. This facility is applied to lock on the auto exposure and white balance so that photos will have corresponding exposure and balance.

APERATURE: As an example of how aperture works, the pupils of our eyes contract to let in less light but when it is dark, then our pupils expand to take in more light. Likewise, the aperture range of a lens refers to the amount that the lens can open up to let more light in or close down to allow less light in.

APERATURE PRIORITY MODE (A or AV) This mode is a semi-automatic/manual mode where you are able to choose the aperture and where the camera automates other settings such as the shutter speed, to ensure you have an evenness in exposure.

CHARGED COUPLE DEVICE: (CCD) The sensor converts light into electrical charges. Once the sensor changes the light into electrons, it then deciphers the value of each cell in the image. The sensor carries the charge across the chip and deciphers it at the corner of the array. Then an analog converter converts each pixel’s value into a digital value to a binary form.

COMPLIMENTARY METAL OXIDE SEMICONDUCTOR (CMOS) The sensor converts light into electrical charges, just as the Charged Coupled Device but with some differences. Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductors use many transistors with each pixel to increase and move the charge by using more traditional wires.

DEPTH OF FIELD: This refers to the zone of sharpness where images can be in focus over wider ranges of distances.

PIXEL: A shortening of the word PIX {Pictures and EL {Element, therefore means, Picture Element.
In digital imaging, a picture element is a single point in a raster image/ bitmap, simplified, a grid of pixels, and each pixel has three dots within it, a green, red and blue dot. Because the grid images are resolution dependant, they are therefore, only as good as the resolution {the measure of total pixels in an image), they were created in, so the more pixels the better the completed image. But, when the image is increased in size, it has to be remembered that although the pixels defining the image can be increased, increasing the number of pixels or making them bigger will result in the data being spread over a larger area which causes the image to lose clarity.

PROGRAM MODE (P): Program mode is similar to Auto but gives more control over some of the other features such as the flash.

MEGABYTE: A byte is the smallest amount of data or information, with each byte being composed of a number of bits, these are pieces of information. As an example, one million bytes equals one megabyte. I view this like a large file that has many single sheets of information within! To accommodate the large amounts, a number notation is put in front of the word megabyte.

GIGABYTE: A gigabyte refers to exactly the same as megabytes but is equal to far more bytes of data, one billion to be precise!

RESOLUTION: Is the amount of detail and the degree of sharpness that the camera can capture and this is measured in pixels.

SECURE DIGITAL HIGH CAPACITY FLASH MEMORY CARDS (SDHC): These cards have a minimum capacity of 4 gigabytes and afford removable memory for compatible digital devices such as digital cameras.

SHUTTER PRIORITY MODE (S or TV): Shutter priority is similar to the aperture priority mode but with this mode you select a shutter speed and then the camera automates the other settings.

TELEPHOTO LENS: is a lens that enables the photographer to take long focal length pictures. With telephoto lenses, there is a lens element at the front of the camera and a second element in the back of the lens in front of the film or in the case of digital cameras, the sensor, and these acts to magnify the front lens. Because the second element increases the focal length of the camera, it makes it seem as though the first lens is further away. Hence, the longer the focal length, the more clarity and increased detail can be seen at greater distances.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FILMLESS CAMERA ~ HOW IT WORKS!
I find that I am better able to understand things when presented to me at an elementary level, and this is how I grasped the concept of how digital cameras work. By breaking down the components inside a digital camera, it simplifies the structural elements by being able to clearly identify them and noting what each of their task is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SEMICONDUCTORS

As opposed to focusing light onto film, digital photography focuses it onto a semiconductor device thereby recording the light electronically. The enclosed computer software of the camera then breaks the electronic information down into digital data, basically, its language!
The lens catches light from the image you are photographing and focuses it on the Charge Coupled Device (CCD) or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS); digital cameras operate these two types.

My camera has the CCD image sensor situated directly underneath the lens. These sensors are used in place of film! Not wishing to get into how solar cells work and losing readers by boredom, I’ll simply say that the CCD sensors in my camera create high-quality and low-noise images whereas CMOS sensors are generally more susceptible to noise. But CMOS sensors consume little power but I have a high energy output on my camera, this is because CCDs use a process that can consume as much as 100 times more than the CMOS sensors. But CCD sensors tend to have higher quality and more pixels than the CMOS sensors. More pixels equal better imaging!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
‘BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED’!
Well they were, but soon ran flat! My camera takes two AA batteries equaling a total voltage of 3 volts. Due to the high energy output on this device, I purchased a charger and rechargeable batteries.
This is just one of the many practical features this camera has. By simply pressing the MENU button, then pressing the FLASH sign that is located next to the SET button, the TOOL image will appear. Scroll down until you come to the 9th setting, BATTERY TYPE. You will be given a choice of four; Alkaline, NiMH, Lithium and Oxyride. NiMH setting is for rechargeable batteries. All batteries will have the relevant lettering/words noted on their base to inform you what type they are.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

RESOLUTION~PIXELS RULE OK!

Because the more pixels a camera has, the more detail it can take in. Furthermore, larger pictures can be obtained without them becoming coarse or hazy. My camera has a high 10 mega pixels resolution which equals to 9,980,928 pixels! This is important because, if like me, you take some bad shots, you will be able to adjust the quality by cropping. Also, with 10 mega pixels or more, enlarging prints will be available in excellent clearness. Of course, this is also handy with good shots. I have had great fun, editing many pictures this way, with far more success than the original pictures I took!

This resolution can furnish you with detailed images up to 16×20. The better the software in enlarging the images, the better the final pictures will be. I have found that this final outcome all depends on how I took the initial photos. I made several mistakes when using my camera with a view to enlarging certain photos. This was because I did not carefully read the comprehensive manual and run through the selections on the camera. For instance, I thought that as the device are 10 mega pixels, that are the size photos I was actually taking, Doh! My camera was initially set on a lower size to enable me to fit more pictures on my memory card. Unfortunately, by the time I realized this, I had missed the chance to enlarge the photos to the size I wanted.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ZOOM LENS ~ ‘GETS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL’!
Digital cameras come with four types of lenses; Replaceable lens systems, Fixed-focus, fixed-zoom lenses, Optical-zoom lenses with automatic focus and Digital zoom, the latter two being the ones I have on my camera. My camera has a 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom lens. My optical-zoom lens with automatic focus has a telephoto range of 30-100cm (0.98feet-3.28feet) and wide options. These actually change the focal length of the lens rather than just magnifying the information that hits the sensor. The principal reason in using telephoto lenses is to be able to take photographs of images at a distance.
There is a negative side to using both the wide angle and telephoto lens features at the same time, because I need to move closer or further from my subject matter. This has presented difficulties when I’m attempting to take natural shots without the subject being aware i.e. pets.
It’s noteworthy to mention that the wide angle lenses exaggerates or stretches scenes/images, whereby the telephoto lenses compacts subject matter. Another negative side to using the optical zoom lens is that it is susceptible to the camera’s movement caused by even the smallest of my hand movements, hence, distorting the image somewhat.
I’ve found that one of the positive sides in using the appropriately designed wide angle lens is that it is more resistant to flare from light i.e. Sun. When taking twilight pictures, incorporating the wide angle facility has given me beautiful panoramic subtle scenes capturing closer images in blacks and greys whilst the sun setting in brilliant oranges and yellows without any white glares across the photos that is sometimes caused by direct angles towards a light source!
One of the fundamental advantages of using a zoom lens is that it is easier to achieve an assortment of compositions without having to take time out in order to change lenses and perhaps losing out on that valued photo opportunity! Because much of the time my subject matter includes my rather active grand-children, this feature is critical in order to catch the action as it happens!
With the digital zoom, the camera acquires pixels from the center of the image sensor and interjects them to make full sized images. Now, depending on the resolution of the picture and the sensor, this may develop a coarse or hazy image.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

FACE TRACKING ~ ‘SAVING FACE’!

My camera’s face tracking function automatically recognizes faces, smiles and even has blink detection! Even 007 would be proud of this little invention!

As mentioned under the sub-heading Semiconductors, digital cameras have computers built into their software. This software is also programmed for face detection, the camera is manufactured in that the database is formulated with millions of facial structures. Such material as relative positioning in the face, structures of the nose and eyes, distances of nose to eyes, face diameters and even skin tone temperatures! The database is not limited to recognizing one face in the image; it will simply focus on the central subject and then additionally focus on other subjects.

As soon as I press the shutter button halfway, the face tracking computational procedure takes the images in the frame, comparing these with the facial structure database, once a match is located, then that image is focused, all in what feels like milliseconds!

But, bear in mind that such issues as low lighting, folks not facing the camera and wide distances between subjects will affect the camera’s computer software’s abilities to recognize and focus. The camera’s extensive manual gives clear instructions on pages 37 to 41 on how to perform this task.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ONBOARD 32 MEGABYTE MEMORY ~ SHORT TERM MEMORY!
The amount of memory this gave me was only fifteen pictures set on the lowest size! As this model is compatible with flash memory cards, I was able to up-graded to a SanDisk 4GB MicroSDHC Memory card costing me £9.97p from Tesco Direct. This expanded my picture capacity to 2,800! The camera slot for both Multimedia and Secure digital cards is located on the left hand corner at the base of the camera. I recently went to visit friends for a week, and kept taking as many pics as I wanted without having to once monitor my photo availability as I knew I had nearly 3,000 at my disposal. Of course, once I came home and had to wade through all the pics, choosing which to up-load on computer wasn’t as much fun! thanks to the ability to delete multiple files at any one time, for many badly taken shots, cut down the editing time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

AE LOCK-AF LOCK ~ ‘UNDER LOCK’ BUT NO KEY!

I find this useful when taking panoramic views because it affords consistent exposure across all the subject matter. This practical tool can prevent over or under exposure of a centered subject. When I want to use the meter or center weighted resource, I select the Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter Priority Mode or Program Mode.

I use the aperture mode when I want to choose a specific aperture value to control the depth of field. For instance, when photographing landscapes whereby a narrow aperture is necessary to ensure sharp lucid imagery in the fore/ background and intermediate. As I am still gaining confidence in operating the various features, I like to use this mode because the camera automatically determines the correct shutter speed, which avoids me causing a poor exposure in my picture.

The shutter priority mode is brilliant when photographing moving subjects like when I attended my grand-son’s sports day in the summer. I needed a faster shutter speed to freeze the motion when my grand-son was in the races. Having this control but knowing the camera would automate the accompanying features is such a valuable asset for me.

The program mode furnishes me with control over some features such as the flash and white balance.

The automatic focus mode helps me gain control over where the camera focuses when I press down the shutter-release button half-way. Recently, I wanted to focus on my son when he was to one side of the setting I wanted to capture. Complying with the manual’s instructions to position the camera so the focus area indicator is on the subject. The auto focus setting can be located by clicking the MENU button, then selecting the CAMERA symbol, scrolling down to the fourth symbol, AF AREA, clicking on the SET dial, the words WIDE and CENTER will appear. By clicking to select the CENTER, I was ready to press the shutter-release button down half way to lock in the focus. Keeping my finger steady on this half pressed motion, I again composed the shot I wanted to take, and then fully pressed down on the button. This ensured that I had my son in clear and distinct focus. The whole operation was simple because the camera has guidance markings whilst performing this task. I will admit that the button is rather sensitive to judge the half way pressure, but as I use this technique more, I’m making fewer mistakes in putting too much pressure on and taking the pictures before I’ve recomposed my shots.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AV OUT SOCKET ~ ‘PUT A SOCKINET’!
When I’ve recorded sequences, such as when I’ve captured a fun game at a party, I am able to view these recordings on my television with friends. Because my camera has an AV Out Socket, located on the left hand side of the device, and came with a USB/AV 3-in-1 cable, I simply set the TV to match the TV’s video’s out configuration, as noted on page 78 of the camera’s manual, then I connect the cable to the USB port on my camera, and the other two connections to the TV’s input port. The movie is then displayed with clarity and sound!
~~~~~~~~~~

‘IN A FLASH’!

This camera has, a Flash that can be disabled, Flash Mode – Fill-in, Flash Mode – Slow Sync, Flash Mode Auto and Flash Type Built-in.

The flash tool can be manually disabled. For instance, when I have been in a library or museum, whereby, the flash would be a distraction for others, I have been able to turn this feature off.

The Automatic mode is a real practical help for me. Sometimes, when the room is well lit and I go to take a picture, the Flash will sometimes trigger automatically because its software can detect when more light is needed. This has saved some neat pictures of my grand-children!

The flash mechanism can also counteract Red-eye by firing the flash several times prior to exposing the photo. This reduces the reflection in the subject’s eyes, the rapid flashes cause a subject’s pupils to contract minimizing the red-eye effect. But remember to tell your subjects before using this feature if you want to avoid the startled rabbit in headlights appearance that pre-flashes can cause folk to look like!

The fill in Forced flash implement, is used when additional lighting is needed. As in a case in point, when I’m taking a picture whereby the source of light is at the back of my subject.

The Slow sync/night scene instrument, is used to capture a dull lit background at night. A great mode for when I’m out bike riding with family members in the evenings.

Rear-curtain sync mode acts similar to Slow sync but with the difference in the flash which doesn’t fire until just before the shutter closes.
The manual gives simple instructions on pages 24 and 25 on how to procure these flash modes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HISTOGRAM DISPLAY ~ ‘MOVING ON UP THE CHART’
Fundamentally, the histogram is a graph that indicates the maximum range of light values the camera can capture.
On my camera, the histogram graph is displayed as a series of mountain peaks. The more of a specific colour, the taller the peak. The left side of the histogram represents the utmost dark values that the camera can record and the right side represents the uppermost white values the camera can capture. Additionally, In the middle of the histogram, there are the mid-range values that symbolize the middle colours. The top and bottom directions of the histogram, illustrated on my camera to look like valleys and peaks are to do with colour information.
What I need to look out for are the the left to right displays that represent dark and light. Because if my image is too dark, the graph will show this by clipping off the light values on the left, and if my image is too light, the histogram will exhibit this by clipping on the right. There are times the peaks seem to be going a little crazy, no doubt due to my erratic techniques!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE ~ ‘SPITTING IMAGE’!

On Pages 69-72 in the camera’s manual specifies how to perform such task as trim and resize. Then once I connect my camera using the 3 in 1 USB cable to the computer, I can ‘Photoshop’ or use various other sites to use my ‘Artistic license’ to get creative!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ELECTRONIC IMAGE STABILIZER ~ ‘GOT A BAD CASE OF THE SHAKES’?
An electronic image stabilizatizer uses electronic processing to control an image’s stability. So, if the equipment’s sensors detect camera shake, the electronic image stabilizer commpensates for this by slightly moving the image so that it stays in the same place on the Charge-Coupled Device. The electronic stabilization works by amplifying the ISO sensitivity until the shutter speed is fast enough for a sharp photo. I tend to need this facility particularly when taking shots on windy days!
But it is worth mentioning that the Electronic image stabilization can result in a decrease in picture resolution.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MACRO MODE ~ “ALL RIGHT MR DE MILLE, I’M READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP”!

The details for using this function is located on page 26 of the camera’s manual and by pressing the FLOWER symbol on the circular dial on the reverse of the camera. When this symbol is pressed, PF will appear on the screen, indicating that the pan focus is set which now means that the camera will focus on every object. Press the symbol again and INF will appear in the LCD screen, indicating that the infinity mode is set whereby the camera will now focus on distant images.

By incorporating my camera’s Macro mode helps me to get really close to the subject and produce superb magnified results. I love using this feature when photographing small animal and insects…back to the startled rabbit look. But I promise that, ”No Animals Were Harmed’ in the making of this film!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MAXIMUM ISO RATING 3200 ~ OVER SENSITIVE, PERFECT!
ISO stands for the International Standardization Organization, which produced a numerical exposure index system that is used to indicate the light sensitivity of the film’s emulsion or sensor on digital cameras.
The ISO system: Film speed is the measure of photographic sensors (or photographic film’s in traditional cameras) sensitivity to light, determined by the scientific study of light-sensitive materials and generally measured on the ISO system.
So, ISO doesn’t control how much light enters the camera, but does however; control how sensitive the camera is to that light. The lower the ISO, the less sensitive the camera is. Hence, a lower ISO will require more light to properly expose a picture than a higher ISO. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image sensor and thus, the possibility to take pictures in low-light situations.
It would seem logical to deduce that the higher the ISO the better. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case because as the ISO is increased; this decreases the quality of the picture. This negative (excuse the pun!) effect is due to the increased sensitivity of higher ISO settings. While increased sensitivity means that the picture can be exposed with less light, it also means the picture will have more distortion. While a small measure of distortion/noise is ok, too much will simply destroy the picture.
I consider ISO as a number that typifies a trade-off between effectiveness, in low light and photo excellence. I personally find that the adequately high ISO value of 3200 with its variable settings on this camera enables me to adjust the setting when needed.
I recently wanted to take a photo of a deer, but my camera’s light meter indicated that there was insufficient light to expose the image. I didn’t want to use the flash and scare away my ‘subject’, so I simply set on the ISO Auto mode via the MENU; this way my camera automatically selects a higher ISO. I could have manually selected a higher ISO, but the calibrated auto feature saved me making any undue mistakes in seeing if the increased sensitivity permitted me to obtain a properly exposed picture. In fact, I didn’t have time to experiment as the little deer didn’t look like he was intending t hang around!
The manual supplies a great deal of information with appropriate symbols that one can co-ordinate with the many settings under the MENU function to assist in making decisions on photography.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PICTBRIDGE COMPATIBLE ~ ‘CARBON COPY’!

PictBridge is a technology that permits printing images from memory cards in digital cameras directly to a printer.
It works by the camera’s software comparing its PictBridge functions to the functions of the printer. Once I’ve connected the camera to the printer via the 3 in 1 USB cable, the LCD screen displays the supported functions on its menu, which then shows print options along with media type, date, available sizes and layouts. I have a choice of how many pics I want to print from one to all that is on the memory card! I use my son’s Canon printer for this feature and it is still compatible, producing smashing imagery despite being a different brand from my AGFA camera.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VIDEO RECORDING WITH SOUND ~ “CUT, PRINT, THAT’S A WRAP”!
My camera is similar to a traditional camcorder but records directly onto the memory card. Also, My camera ‘movies’ offer the convenience of being light and compact. The length of the video can be until the memory’s capacity has been exhausted. I love this feature when attending parties. Pages 51 to 60 of the User manual gives clear and concise terminology to explain this amazing feature, which also demonstrates the sound module. I find the sound works adequately audibly if I’m standing fairly close to the sound source.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PC ~ ‘MAKING THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS’!

Of all the facilities available to me, this is the one I use the most: connecting my camera to my PC to up-load photos to make albums, e-mails and more! The fun of sending cherished pics to my daughter of her beautiful children, sending family who live abroad, pictures that will provide them terrific images of loved ones and so on. The possibilities are endless.

All the instructions are so easy to follow, with software disc provided. The camera is so user friendly. Now, much of the time I do not need even to consult the manual for many features as the camera’s MENU, FUNCTION and DIAL make operating almost second nature due to the simplicity in symbols.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
APERATURE ~THE ‘F’ WORD!
My camera has a Focal Length of f=6.2-18.6mm and Aperture of f/3-5.6
Basically, a camera’s aperture is written as f {focal length and then the number is divided by the aperture’s diameter.
An aperture like my camera’s f/5.6 is great for general uses as it affords an average depth of field. But setting a wider aperture, my camera has this facility, allows me to shoot in darker settings because it allows more light to reach the sensor. For instance, I’ve used this feature when I have been bike riding in the evenings. I have managed to take some lovely pictures of a river where across the water’s edge has the illuminated town. But I have found that the zoom couldn’t take in a great detail but the wider setting enabled me to catch the ambiance of the lights.
The depth-of-field extends in front of and also behind the point that you’re actually focused on. I have found that the best photos are taken by having a good focal length of the lens used, and being aware of the distance I am from the subject I want to photograph, and the aperture of my lens. To take the best shot, I need to vary these three until I have the appropriate settings. Unfortunately, as was the experience of taking the picture over the water to catch the town’s structures and lights, sometimes, I can only attain two out of three features! Although my camera sets the aperture automatically, I am also able to adjust the setting manually, thus giving me more control over the style I want to take photographs.
So, to obtain as much depth-of-field as possible along with attempting to catch as much clarity in detail, I use a wide-angle lens, and set a small aperture. Yet, for the times when I want to capture just my grand-children without taking in too much of the surrounding areas, I use the telephoto lens, setting a large aperture, and then I stand closer to my little subjects! This gives me sharp detail of the images I want to capture, but subtly phases out the background.
As a rule of thumb, it’s worth remembering that larger apertures have lower f-numbers and smaller apertures means that images. So, a higher F number set with a smaller aperture, with a slower shutter speed and a wider depth of field. Whereas, a lower F number, set on a larger aperture setting, with a faster shutter speed and narrower depth of field.
Lenses with a greater dimensions of aperture settings furnish one with greater creative adaptability. Personally, I like to air on the side of caution by setting my camera with a small aperture, because I have found that generally, both the fore and the background will have sharp clarity so that gives my photographs greater depth of field. I continue to experiment though, as I gain more confidence in using the various settings on the camera.
The aperture of f/3-5.6 on this model affords many artistic possibilities in creating some memorable pictures, such as when I take images of butterflies. The detail of these enchanting creatures, along with their vibrant colours is captivating.
Setting the aperture value is so simple on this model. By selecting the ‘AV’ from the ‘scene’ mode submenu, then pressing the ‘set’ button to enter the adjust mode. Now, by using the up and down triangular keys, you can select the required aperture value options. One of the superb features of this neat little camera is that you don’t have to adjust the shutter speed according to the aperture value because this model does this automatically to match the brightness and vice versa! How great is that?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

‘BOOKED IT, PACKED IT’….

The camera comes securely and practically packaged. The camera includes 2x AA batteries, grey durable nylon wrist strap, USB cable, AV cable, CD-ROM, camera pouch and an 88 page comprehensive User Manual.

I have condensed twenty-one fundamental features of this beautiful camera that only weighs 125g and dimensions being a very compact 92×60.5×25.03mm Yet there are so many more brilliant attributes to this product. Having written over 5,516 words on this apparatus, I feel the rest of this multi faceted camera should be left for you to enjoy in finding out should you decide to purchase. Which brings me to the price of this high quality digital camera. My son bought me this precious gift from Tesco Direct for just £39.95.

This camera has been one of the most valued gifts I have ever received due to the copious amount of features it allows me to enjoy. You can’t put a price on memories I suppose!

Everyone benefits in health and in weight control when they switch ALL butters, vegetable oils, or fat back grease and replace all of those with Olive oil on toast, popcorn, salads, and switch to coconut oil for cooking. You must not cook olive oil at high temperatures because it causes chemical structure to mutate and instead of being healthy it becomes a health hazard. On the other hand, Coconut oil can be cooked at high temperatures and it is very healthy just as olive oils are.

One thing we all need each and everyday of our lives is health!
Many are over stressed in over drive and have taxed the immune system to the point that it is shutting down. In some cases their bodies have excreted so much adrenaline from the Adrenalin Gland till there is not anymore “fight or flight” Epinephrine
[Epinephrine - Epinephrine (also referred to as adrenaline;) is a hormone and neurotransmitter. It is a catecholamine, a sympathomimetic monoamine derived from the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. (referring to the adrenal gland, which sits atop the kidneys and secretes epinephrine).]
left to produce. When this happens our body becomes vulnerable to disease.
In some cases, it is nearly impossible to stop this downward spiral of destruction because the chemical has such a profound effect on our brains that in turn effects our entire lives. But even the worse case scenario can find hope in providing the body what it has to have to function properly.
Let us help you to regain control of your health!
Using all natural and botanical herbs combined with common sense, daily supplements of vitamins, minerals, and a healthy diet are basics that get the body back on track to optimal health.
Rest is essential for the healing properties to manifest speedily. And a healthy environment is also important to get optimal results

We use a Healing Approach to master Disease Control and operate in Preventive Health care as well as Traditional and Conventional Medicine.
Call to schedule your consultation at 573-765-0166 for Kimi.
The Bible tells us that we are to obey our physicians and we would never counsel against your own doctors advice. Most of our remedies can be found the kitchen cabinets anywhere, U.S.A.
And if there is a concern about a specific herb we would ask that you consult with your physician. We do not accept insurance however, we will set up payment plans. Our goal is to help you feel better, look better, and live longer!
Here at Live Again, we only provide Natural and Homeopathic Remedies. And for the most part, our goal of optimal health is obtained best by Preventive Health Care. Natural Remedies are generally less expensive than prescription drugs, less side effects, and usually have more benefits than just healing a specific disease. For instance the treatment for fighting cancer also fights inflammation.
I live about forty five miles to the nearest health food store. And it only has a small variety of the herbs that I am accustomed to on a regular basis. I had access to some very big health food stores in Florida and in Mississippi. Since my return to Missouri, I have found myself ordering bulk herbs by the pound and many of the vitamins by quantity as well. It saved on time, money and shipping. Many of the herbs you will find listed here, you can purchase directly from me. My goal is to do so well with my Miracle Mask that I can begin an international line of my own personal health and beauty supplies. Meanwhile, I wanted to help my family and friends with this information. When we do our consultations then we would go into much more detail on the four cornerstones of the healing approach to address your specific health needs. We believe that 1. Nutrients, 2. Natural Hormones, 3. Life Style, 4. Spirituality are some of the basic foundations to reversing disease. Listed here are just a few of some of the herbs and recommendations for some problems that many Americans are dealing with currently. These herbs in and of itself is not the cure. That is where the consultation comes in. There are some foods that have to be abstained from and other foods that need to be partook of. It is like if you were eating foods with high calories and no vitamin or nutritional value, we need you to now do just the opposite, high vitamin and nutritional value with very few calories. Spices and Teas are very beneficial in the healing process. In the Consultation we can determine which ones are best for you.

Nature, the predominant element around which life in Oregon revolves, results in the state’s topographical diversity and rugged, natural beauty, and dictates the experiences the tourist is likely to have.

The 362-mile-long coast, for instance, comprised of rain forests, sand dunes, black sand beaches, and unique rock formations, is splintered by some dozen rivers, which flow into the Pacific. The spine of the Coast Range and the Klamath Mountains provides a westerly skeleton, while the Columbia River defines the border between Washington and Oregon in the north. The Cascade Mountains, black basalt formations densely-carpeted with thick, green forests and capped with snow-covered volcanoes, cradle alpine lakes and a national park, and extend form Mt. Hood in the north to Hayden Mountain in the south, serving to separate the western half of the state with its central high desert plateau. In the northeast, the 10,000-foot Wallowa Mountains invert themselves into 6,600-foot-deep Hells Canyon, the world’s deepest river-carved gorge.

Abundant vineyards produce an array of excellent wines, while locally grown marrionberries figure in Oregon cooking, along with the bounty of the land’s fruits and vegetables and the rivers’ salmon.

Columbia River Gorge

Formed by volcanic activity and both basalt lava and glacial floods, the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, spanning 80 miles from Troutdale in the west to the Dalles in the east, and encompassing 292,000 acres on both the Washington and Oregon sides, had been created by Congress in 1986. The Columbia River itself, at 1,243 miles in length, is the second largest such artery in the continental United States and the only nearly-sea level passage through the mountain range stretching between Canada and Mexico. Originating in British Columbia, it flows through the mountains, before turning south and finally west where it releases 250,000 cubic feet of water per second into the Pacific. Topographically featuring Douglas fir, hemlock, and western red cedar in the west, the gorge transforms into drier pine forest and grassland in the east.

Its primary Native American residents, the “Watlala,” who had been more commonly known as the “Cascades,” had lived on both sides of the river between Cascade Locks and Sandy River, using it for sustenance and trade by fishing for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and eel. The land provided berries and roots and the nearby mountains facilitated hunting for deer and elk. Living in structures made of cedar planks, the Watlala seasonally traveled down the river to fish and gather plant foods, such as “wapato” and “camas,” in cedar-carved canoes, while wood and mountain sheep horns had provided the raw materials for tools, bowls, and pots. Wrap-twined baskets sported intricate decorations of nature, people, and animals.

Controlling the portage round Cascade Falls, which had been too treacherous for canoe or boat passage, they collected tolls in the form of traded goods in exchange for access.

The Watlala-signed Willamette Valley Treaty ceded their southern bank of the Columbia River to the US in 1855, and they had subsequently been relocated to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation two years later.

Of the gorge’s numerous waterfalls, Multnomah Falls, plummeting almost 620 feet from its origin on Larch Mountain, constitutes the second-highest year-round waterfall in the US. “Multnomah,” translating as “those closer to the water,” with “water” referring to the Columbia River itself, cascades down a cliff in which five flows of Yakima basalt are visible, and its spray, freezing in early-winter and melting in late-spring, causes the rock over which it travels to crack and break away. The falls are accessed by several hiking trails.

The adjacent, Cascadian-style, natural stone Multnomah Falls Lodge, designed by architect Albert E. Doyle in 1925 to serve travelers arriving by car, train, or steamboat, sits on land donated by the Oregon and Washington Railroad and Navigation Company to the city of Portland. The lodge’s east end, which includes the later-added Forest Service Visitor’s Center in 1929, had preceded its post-war remodeling and 1946 reopening. On April 22, 1981, the lodge, along with the first 1.1 miles of its Larch Mountain trail, had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the day facility sports two second-floor, fireplace and stone dining rooms overlooking the falls and the Columbia River. An extensive gift shop is located on the main level.

The Columbia River Interpretive Center, located across the Columbia River-spanned, erector set-appearing Bridge of the Gods in Stevenson, Washington, provides snapshots of life in the area in a modern, two-level museum, with exhibits such as a horse-drawn buckboard from 1890, a wooden fish wheel, a 1921 log-carrying Mack truck, an 1895 Corliss steam engine used to drive saw carriages and conveyors in a Cascade Locks lumber mill, hand-crafted canoes, and a 1917 Curtiss JN-4 Jenny biplane, which had facilitated local transportation.

Further east, and back on the Oregon side, the Columbia Gorge Hotel, built on a scenic cliff overlooking the Columbia River, is a stately, neo-Morish structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of Interior unofficially dubbed the “Waldorff of the West.” Constructed in 1921 by timber tycoon Simon Benson as a tribute to America’s post-war prosperity, it had hosted social and political dignitaries, presidents such as Coolidge and Roosevelt, movie stars like Clara Bow and Rudolph Valentino, and musicians from the Big Bands, having played an integral role during the Roaring Twenties when Model T Fords had traveled the roads and steamers had plied the rivers. Voted one of the world’s top 500 hotels by Conde Nast magazine, the hotel, sitting on meticulously manicured, tiny waterfall-dotted grounds, features an elegant, chandelier- and fireplace-adorned lobby and restaurant.

The Mount Hood Railroad, located a short distance from the hotel, traces its origins to 1905 when Utah lumberman David Eccles laid track in order to transport timber between the forest and his lumber mill by a steam engine-powered logging train, and today offers daily excursions along the 8.5-mile stretch between Hood River and Odell through predominantly forested and fruit orchard topography and less frequent runs the full 22 miles to Parkdale, gateway to Mt. Hood.

Mt. Hood

Mt. Hood, named after British admiral Samuel Hood in 1792 and part of the Cascade Mountains, is an inactive volcano whose last, although minor, eruption, occurred between 1845 and 1865. At 11,235 feet, it is Oregon’s tallest peak. Glacier- and river-sculpted over the years, the snow-covered mountain, rising above Trillum Lake, features a 50-degree slope at its last, 2,000-foot rise, and offers year-round hiking and skiing.

Its story, however, is every bit that of the lodge designated “Timberline” and nestled on its south slope at the 6,000-foot level. The result of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the federal agency created in 1933 to provide gainful employment to Americans who had been rendered idle by the Great Depression, it had been constructed by a predominantly inexperienced workforce which had used natural, Oregon-indigenous material.

Its initial site survey, made in the spring of 1936 under 14-foot snow accumulations and only accessible by a primitive road which terminated a half mile from the actual location, yielded to the first drawings and subsequent groundbreaking on June 11 of a European chateau and alpine-style lodge designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood and constructed entirely of gray, almost rock-resembling wood whose roof line echoed that of the steep mountain slope behind it.

Oregon had provided its foundation in the literal sense by supplying the mountain it had been built on and the natural materials which had been severed from their wombs and reduced to the individual buildings blocks which had been intricately reassembled into the lodge itself, inclusive of the forest-supplied wood for its exterior structure and interior furniture and carvings, and the mountainside- and quarry-yielding andesite stone for its walls and fireplaces.

Featuring a hexagonal core known as the “head house,” which had been inspired by the outline of the mountain peak behind it, and a single, angled wing extending from either of its sides, it had been designed as an extension of, as opposed to obstruction to, its surroundings.

Completed in only a 15-month period, it had been dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 28, 1937 and opened to the public the following February.

The hexagonally-shaped head house, subdivided into the lower lobby, upper lobby, and mezzanine, features a truncated, 55-foot-high “timberline” arch supported by carved sides and a top crossbeam, in the center of which is a six-sided stone chimney which sports three, railroad track andiron-adorned fireplaces. Hexagonal ponderosa pine columns, each weighing seven tons and milled from a single tree, surround the lodge, while Oregon white oak provides its floor planks. The hexagonal pattern is repeated in the hand-forged wrought iron chandeliers and floor lamps, and floor-to-ceiling windows (attempt to) provide views through the 21-foot-high snow banks. Some 820 pieces of wooden, hand crafted furnishings and carvings were made in the WPA woodworking shop in Portland.

The Cascade Dining Room, located off the main lobby and thresholded by wrought iron gates made in the WPA blacksmith shop, exudes rustic, early-1900s elegance with a polished, wooden floor; a wood-beamed ceiling; a relief carving-adorned stone fireplace entitled “Forest Scene,” and a bar.

Guest rooms, varying in size and appointment from bunk beds to fireplace suites, are rustic with heavy wooden doors; wrought iron latches; leather-and-iron lamps; heavy, wooden beds; and knotty pine panelings.

Timberline Lodge, the only public building of its size constructed entirely by hand with original craft work in wood, wrought iron, mosaic, painting, and carved linoleum, and, since 1978, a National Historic Landmark, is every bit a “sight” as an overnight lodge. It serves some two million annual visitors, only a small percentage of whom are actually skiers.

Returning to a roaring fire which castes warmth and light into the wooden lobby from its central stone fireplace after a day of skiing and enjoying award-winning cuisine in the rustically elegant Cascade Dining Room, and then cacooning oneself in quilts in a knotty pine paneled guest room on the other side of whose wall the half, snow-buried pine trees surround the base of Mount Hood whose jagged, black granite, snow-blanketed peak is periodically shrouded in cloud and mist throughout the night, is a quintessential Oregon experience.

Central Oregon

Because the Cascade Mountains mostly drain traditional storm fronts of their moisture, and therefore provide distinct climactic zones on either of their sides, Central Oregon, to the east of them, forms a high desert plateau and enjoys 300 days of sunshine, as contrasted with the rain-drenched coast. Access is via winding, ascending Route 20 through the dense, needle-thin ponderosa and lodgepole pine of Willamette National Forest, over Tombstone and Santiam Passes, and finally through Deschutes National Forest, all of which are often shrouded in low-altitude cloud, and lead to an area of snow-capped mountains, 150 mountain lakes, and 500 miles of rivers. They afford a variety of recreational opportunities, including golfing, fishing, biking, horseback riding, hiking, climbing, rafting, and skiing. Bend, an accommodations base and once a booming timber town, capitalizes on the area’s attractions with hotels, resorts, restaurants, and services. The area is alternatively served by nearby Redmond Airport.

Sisters, one of Central Oregon’s attractions, is a quintessential western town of about 1,000 with 1880s-style storefronts and wooden boardwalks named after the Three Sisters Mountains in the southwest. Initially accessed by trails forged through the Santiam Pass to the high desert by those hoping to strike it rich in the gold mines of Eastern Oregon and Idaho, it had developed into a small town after the trails had evolved into wagon roads. Wood from the surrounding pine forests had established lumber as its principle economic activity, although tourism plays an increasingly important role. Bronco Billy’s Saloon, built in 1912, is an historically important building in Sisters.

The High Desert Museum, located a few miles south of Bend on Highway 97, is a modern, continually-expanding facility which showcases the wildlife and landscapes of eight western states in both indoor and outdoor exhibits, including those of western exploration and settlement, the Columbia River plateau Indians, a “desertarium,” an 1880 homestead ranch, a working sawmill, and a raptor center.

The area’s geology can be studied in nearby Newberry National Volcanic Monument. One of the largest “shield”-shaped volcanoes in the Lower 48 states and located along the Northwest Rift zone of faults, the 500-square-mile Newberry Caldera, whose most recent eruption, the Big Obsidian Flow, occurred 1,300 years ago, cradles two trout- and salmon-abundant lakes: Paulina Lake, at 250 feet one of Oregon’s deepest, and 180-foot-deep East Lake, are both fed by hot springs below them. Once believed to have existed as a single entity, Paulina and East Lakes had been divided by pumice and water deposits 6,200 years ago.

Paulina Peak, the crater’s highest at 7,985 feet, provides views of the High Desert plateau and the Cascade Mountains.

The Deschutes River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River, flows through the monument’s northwest corner, and offers fishing, kayaking, and white water rafting, while more than 100 miles of trails, interspersing the monument, facilitate hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing, and snowmobiling. Area wildlife includes deer, elk, black bear, ducks, osprey, geese, tundra swans, and bald eagles.

Aside from the caldera, three separate areas can be visited.

The Lava Lands Visitor Center, the first of these, depicts Central Oregon’s geology, archaeology, history, and fauna. Ranger-led interpretive hikes take visitors through the volcanic landscape. 500-foot-high Lava Butte, whose crater had been formed 7,000 years ago when it had erupted and spewed lava over a nine-square-mile area, is accessible by a perimeter road and affords views of the Newberry Volcano and Cascade Mountain Range.

The Lava River Cave, a one-mile-long lava tube, had been created when a river of molten lava had formed a channel whose sides hardened, creating a roof, but the hot lava had continued to flow through the tube, leaving it hollow. Its interior temperature is now a constant 42 degrees Fahrenheit.

Finally, the Lava Cast Forest had been created when Newberry Volcano vent-originating lava had flowed through a miniature ponderosa pine forest, enveloping the trees and forming molds round their now-burned bases when they had cooled. A one-mile trail leads through the forest, which is being progressively reclaimed by young pines.

Aviation-Related Northwest Oregon

Northwest Oregon features two significant sights, which not only center round aviation, but also retain the state’s nature-oriented theme.

The Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, the first of these, had been created by Delford M Smith, founder of Evergreen International Aviation, and his son, Captain Michael King Smith, who had served as Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force and had been an F-15 Fighter pilot and the head of the 123rd Fighter Squadron of the Oregon Air National Guard. Centerpiece of the museum’s three modern, A-frame, aviation, space, and IMAX buildings, located in McMinnville, is the Hughes H-4 Hercules, the world’s largest transport flying boat, designed and built by the Hughes Aircraft Company entirely of natural, laminated birch wood due to World War II-imposed metal usage restrictions and hence given the unofficial nickname of “Spruce Goose.”

Designed to fulfill the 1942 US Department of War requirement for a very large aircraft to transport personnel and war material across the Atlantic where aircraft had hitherto been frequent targets of German U-boats, it had originally been intended as one of three stipulated by the contract, which had dictated a two-year development period. Powered by eight, 3,000-hp Pratt and Whitney Wasp Major radial engines, the H-4, with a 218.8-foot overall length and a 319.11-foot wingspan, accommodated 750 fully-equipped troops in its cavernous, dual-deck fuselage and had a 400,000-pound maximum take off weight. The only airframe ever completed, and thus serving as the prototype, it had first flown on November 2, 1947 when Howard Hughes himself had covered less than a mile at a 70-foot altitude while maintaining a 135-mph air speed. It became its only flight.

The museum retains its natural theme by cultivating its own vineyard in front of it appropriately named “Spruce Goose Vineyards,” and a wine-tasting room and gift shop, where one can sample the wines of the area’s abundant other vineyards, is located in the aviation building.

The second aviation-related sight, the Tillamook Air Museum, is located on the Oregon coast and is accessed by Route 6, which curves through Tillamook State Forest’s dense, multiply-shaded pine and pinnacles at the 1,586-foot summit of the Coast range. One of 17 US Navy, coastline-constructed hangars to house k-class blimps used for anti-submarine coast patrol and convey escort, the 1,072-foot-long, 296-foot-wide hangar, made entirely of wood due, again, to war-restricted metal use, had been commissioned in December of 1942 at Naval Air Station Tillamook to serve the Oregon-Washington corridor.

Of the two hangars constructed here, Hangar B had been the first to have been completed in the spring of 1943, followed one month later by Hangar A. Housing Squadron ZP-33’s eight k-ships, it features six, 30-ton, railroad track-guided door sections covering the 120-foot-high, 220-foot-wide opening which thresholds the 15-story-high, seven-acre internal space. The 251-foot blimps, attaining lift with 425,000-cubic-foot helium bags, could remain aloft for three days and cover 2,000 miles.

After the air station had been decommissioned in 1948, the two hangars had been used for several purposes, including those of hay bail storage, and the material in Hangar A had unexplainably sparked and ignited in 1992, destroying it. Two years later, Hangar B had been developed into the current, nationally historic aviation museum displaying a vintage collection of restored, exclusively flyable aircraft.

Here, wood, the natural element of Oregon’s forests, had been used to build the hangars in which dirigibles, using the natural gas of helium to attain lift, had been stored, in an ultimate act of history preserving history, and of nature serving man, which is, in essence, the story of Oregon.

Moving the reel of a fishing rod in a circular way, knowing you have caught something and have yet to know how big of a fish it is and what kind is a relaxing way to spend some time independently or with family or/and friends as you smell the cool area just above the water. Considering how many more fish you’ll attempt to catch, you’re left with some anticipation as to what you might bring to a future conversation or catch on photo.

Fishing is a casual, anticipating, and even interesting way many people use their time, and exchangiing strategies to catch more is a conversation topic sure to hold attention amongst guests or friends with the same interest. Did you know that there are even different types of fishing? These include Muskie Fishing, Lake Trout Fishing, Walleye Fishing, Northern Pike Fishing, Ice Fishing, Crappie Fishing, Perch Fishing, Largemouth Bass Fishing, Smallmouth Bass Fishing and Whitefish Fishing.

Consider hitting a target you had after it had moved, or had seen it from a far distance, or the chances of hitting it seemed unlikely. Certain people have been admired for their role in earning credit whether it be for hunting bears, deer or other. Various types include Wolf Hunting, Duck Hunting, Black Bear Hunting, Grouse Hunting and Whitetail Deer Hunting. ALL of these are options in a particular trip you can choose to take.

A cabin, for instance, would be a good option for anyone planning a major fishing or/and huning trip. This convenient way of storing your equipment and necessities makes for a matching type of living condition while making your fishing and hunting arrangements. The great outdoors are a unitting experience for family and friends, and residing in a cabin further ensures this spirit. With a cabin arranged, you are absolutely positive to have a memorable time. Even the simple views of lakes you have as options are enough to make for outstanding pictures of family and friends together. There are many things you can do in this sort of vacation destination.
